Jelly Tots were introduced in 1965 by Rowntree’s, a British confectionery company, as a creative way to use broken pieces from their Jelly Slabs. The idea came from Dr. Brian Boffey, a chemist at Rowntree’s, who was experimenting with a powdered jelly that would set instantly with water. Although the powdered jelly experiment failed, it resulted in small, gumdrop-like droplets that inspired the creation of Jelly Tots. These bite-sized, sugar-coated sweets, initially disc-shaped and later dome-shaped, were flavored with fruit juices like strawberry, lemon, lime, blackcurrant, and orange. Their resourceful origin and vibrant flavors made them a hit, especially with children, and they remain a beloved treat, now owned by Nestlé since their acquisition of Rowntree’s in 1988.
