Nestlé Smarties, the colorful, candy-coated chocolate treats, originated in the United Kingdom and trace their roots to 1882, when H.I. Rowntree & Company began producing “Chocolate Beans.” These were initially uncoated chocolate drops, inspired by earlier French confectionery techniques involving sugar-coated chocolates, which date back to the 18th and 19th centuries. In 1937, Rowntree’s renamed the product “Smarties Chocolate Beans” under the leadership of George Harris, and by 1938, they dropped “Chocolate Beans” due to trading standards, adopting the name “Smarties.” The exact reason for the name “Smarties” is unclear, but some suggest it may relate to the onomatopoeic rattle of the candies in their iconic cylindrical tubes.

Rowntree’s, based in York, England, pioneered sugar-coating techniques in the UK, drawing from French methods like “panning,” which prevented chocolate from melting and staining hands. By 1938, Smarties’ popularity led to the construction of a dedicated factory block in York. Nestlé acquired Rowntree’s in 1988, continuing production and expanding the brand globally. Today, Smarties are sold primarily in Europe, Canada, Australia, South Africa, and the Middle East, but not widely in the United States due to a trademark conflict with the Smarties Candy Company, which produces a different tablet candy.

The candies, known for their vibrant colors (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, mauve, pink, and brown), originally had varied flavors, such as coffee for light-brown and orange-flavored chocolate for orange Smarties. Since 2006, Nestlé has used natural colorings, with the orange Smartie remaining the only flavored variety (using orange oil). Production for the European market moved from York to Germany in 2007, with a major facility in Toronto, Canada, serving other regions.
